US President Donald Trump and New York City Mayor Zohran Mamdani held their third face-to-face meeting on Monday at Gracie Mansion, discussing housing, immigration enforcement and public safety ahead of the United Nations General Assembly.
A major focus was Mamdani’s proposal to develop 12,000 affordable homes at Sunnyside Yard in Queens.
Trump said the long-discussed project could now move forward, while both leaders spoke about areas where the city and federal governments could cooperate on housing and affordability.
The meeting was cordial despite differences between the Republican president and the Democratic Socialist mayor.
Mamdani said he raised his views on keeping New Yorkers safe, including immigrant residents, while Trump publicly said he hoped Mamdani would become a successful mayor.
The two also differed over press access. Mamdani said he supports access for all members of the press, while Trump defended restrictions placed on some news organisations.
The meeting was their third in person, following earlier discussions at the White House after Mamdani’s election and another meeting in February.
Trump’s latest visit to Gracie Mansion came during his trip to New York for the UN General Assembly, where he is scheduled to address world leaders.
