US President Donald Trump has been nominated for the 2025 Nobel Peace Prize for what has been described as his “extraordinary and historic role” in brokering a ceasefire between Israel and Iran, following a 12-day military confrontation that brought the Middle East to the brink of a wider war.
US Representative Buddy Carter submitted the nomination, crediting Trump with ending the armed conflict and helping prevent a major regional escalation. In a letter addressed to the Nobel Peace Prize Committee, Carter wrote, “President Trump’s leadership helped end the armed conflict between Israel and Iran and prevented the world’s largest state sponsor of terrorism from obtaining the most lethal weapon on the planet.”

The ceasefire, which Trump announced late Monday, was set to take effect overnight and marked the end of nearly two weeks of hostilities that began when Israel launched preemptive strikes on Iranian nuclear facilities. The conflict quickly escalated, with Iran responding through a barrage of missile attacks and the U.S. intervening by striking three critical Iranian sites. Iran later retaliated with rockets aimed at a U.S. airbase in Qatar—though U.S. officials confirmed that advance warnings were received and no casualties occurred.
Rep. Carter praised Trump’s diplomatic maneuvering and rapid response during the crisis. “His influence was instrumental in forging a swift agreement that many believed to be impossible,” he wrote. “These actions exemplify the very ideals that the Nobel Peace Prize seeks to recognize: the pursuit of peace, the prevention of war, and the advancement of international harmony.”
This marks yet another Nobel nomination for Trump, who has previously been nominated by lawmakers for his role in various international agreements, including the Abraham Accords. Earlier this year, Representative Darrell Issa (R-Calif.) also submitted a nomination, citing the president’s global influence following his return to the political stage with his 2024 election victory.
According to the Nobel Prize’s official website, there are currently 338 candidates in contention for the 2025 Nobel Peace Prize—a number that includes individuals and organizations from around the world. The Nobel Committee is expected to announce the shortlist later this year, with the Peace Prize winner to be revealed in October 2025.
