New Delhi: US President Donald Trump made a surprise live phone appearance during an event in New Delhi attended by US Secretary of State Marco Rubio, where he praised Prime Minister Narendra Modi and described himself as a “big fan.”
The event marked the 250th anniversary of the US Declaration of Independence and featured a large audience alongside a giant screen displaying Trump’s live remarks.
Addressing the gathering, Trump said, “I love the Prime Minister. Modi is great. He’s my friend,” while reaffirming strong US-India ties.
Trump also stated that India could count on full American support, adding, “Anything India wants, they get.” He highlighted the US economy and stock market performance while praising Rubio as potentially “the greatest secretary of state in the history of the US.”
The remarks came shortly after US envoy Sergio extended an invitation on Trump’s behalf for PM Modi to visit the White House. Rubio’s India visit also follows a recent US immigration policy change requiring many legal immigrants in America to leave and apply for permanent residency from abroad, a move that has raised concerns among immigrant communities.
Trump concluded the call by asking attendees to convey his greetings to PM Modi and reiterating his admiration for the Indian leader.
