Trump Says He’ll Discuss AI With Xi, But Wants To “Leave It Exactly Where It Is”

Date:

Washington: US President Donald Trump says artificial intelligence will feature prominently in his meeting with Chinese President Xi Jinping, while indicating that he wants the technology’s current direction to remain unchanged. Trump made the remarks ahead of Xi’s visit to Washington on Thursday.

In a social media post, Trump used the term “Super Intelligence” for AI and said the subject would receive significant attention during his talks with Xi.

He also claimed that China shares his position and pointed to the US Department of Justice as the main safeguard.

Trump has previously said the United States already has measures allowing authorities to regulate and prosecute AI companies. His comments come as concerns about the possible misuse of advanced AI continue to grow.

Earlier this month, an Anthropic researcher warned that people developing the technology believed it could potentially threaten humanity before the end of the decade.

Despite those concerns, analysts cited in the report expect strong competition between the United States and China in AI to make major agreements difficult.

Trump has continued to support AI development and criticized opponents of the technology, saying they could be helping those who want to slow its progress.
