Washington DC: US President Donald Trump on Friday said he was “losing faith” in Iran, accusing Tehran of repeatedly violating its commitments even as high-level diplomatic talks between the two countries continue.
Speaking during a televised Cabinet meeting at Camp David, Trump alleged that Iranian leaders frequently fail to honour agreements, casting doubt on the credibility of ongoing negotiations.
“They do lie, and they do misrepresent,” Trump said. “They always want to talk, but they break their word so often.”
Despite his criticism, Trump said senior US officials remain actively engaged in discussions with Iranian counterparts. He identified Special Envoy Steve Witkoff, Senior Adviser Jared Kushner, Vice President JD Vance and Secretary of State Marco Rubio as leading the negotiations.
“We have great people talking,” Trump said.
The US president also referred to a recent attack on an American military base in Jordan, saying it took place while diplomatic efforts were underway.
“Instead, I got a call from Pete that they just shot five missiles at one of our bases in Jordan,” Trump said, referring to Secretary of War Pete Hegseth.
Asked whether he expected further attacks, Trump said he was not prepared to rule out additional hostilities.
“I think I’m going to be foolish to say no. You always have to keep your guard up,” he said.
Commenting on Iran’s military capabilities, Trump said he believed Tehran’s strength would eventually diminish despite periodic gains.
“They get weaker. They get a little stronger, maybe now, but they’ll get weaker, and then they peter out,” he said.
Trump’s remarks come as Washington and Tehran continue diplomatic efforts aimed at easing tensions over Iran’s nuclear programme and broader security concerns in the Middle East.
