Washington, D.C: On Monday, US President Donald Trump announced that the United States would reinstate what he described as an “Iranian blockade” in the Strait of Hormuz, while demanding a 20 per cent reimbursement on all non-Iranian cargo passing through the strategic waterway.

The announcement came just hours after Trump told Fox News’ Fox & Friends, “We’re taking over the strait,” adding that the US could become the “guardian angel of the strait.” He also stated that other wealthy nations should compensate the United States for protecting the strategic waterway, saying, “We should be reimbursed for that” and “We’re going to get paid for guarding the strait.”
Trump also accused Iran of violating a previous agreement with Washington, stating, “We had a deal and they broke it,” while claiming “Iran has nothing” to stop the US plan.
Iran strongly rejected the proposal. Dr. Mohammad Mokhber, Advisor and Aide to the Supreme Leader, said Tehran would never retreat from defending the Strait of Hormuz. In a statement posted on X, he said, “We defend it so that in the future, for the passage of our ships, we are not forced to pay tribute to the enemy,” adding that backing down is not an option.
