President-elect Donald Trump has issued a stern warning to countries unwilling to take back their deported citizens, declaring that the United States will impose economic penalties and cease business ties with non-compliant nations.
In an interview with Time magazine, following his recognition as the 2024 “Person of the Year,” Trump made clear that immigration enforcement would remain a top priority under his administration. “I want them out, and the countries have got to take them back, and if they don’t take them back, we won’t do business with those countries, and we will tariff those countries very substantially,” Trump said.
This tough stance comes as no surprise, as Trump’s campaign heavily focused on bolstering border security and cracking down on illegal immigration. With his return to the White House being hailed as a “historic comeback,” Trump’s approach to immigration is set to become even more uncompromising.
Trump outlined his strategy to ensure swift deportations, emphasizing his readiness to implement new detention measures if necessary. However, he stressed that his ultimate goal was to avoid long-term detention facilities.
“Whatever it takes to get them out. I don’t care. Honestly, whatever it takes to get them out. Again, I’ll do it absolutely within the confines of the law, but if it needs new camps, but I hope we’re not going to need too many because I want to get them out, and I don’t want them sitting in camp for the next 20 years,” he remarked.
The president-elect also reiterated his vision for a stricter, law-abiding immigration system.
