Tsunami Warning for California Ends After 7.0-Magnitude Earthquake

Date:

No damage was reported following a tsunami warning issued on Thursday, December 5, for Northern California after a powerful earthquake struck the Pacific Ocean.

The National Tsunami Warning Center updated the public about an hour after the quake, stating that there was “no tsunami danger” for the U.S. west coast, British Columbia, and Alaska.

Earlier, an alert had warned coastal residents that “a series of powerful waves and strong currents may impact coasts near you,” advising them to “move to high ground or inland immediately” to stay safe.

The earthquake was recorded as having a magnitude of 7.0 by the United States Geological Survey and the National Tsunami Warning Center.

The quake occurred around 10:45 a.m. local time about 45 miles southwest of the coast of Eureka, Calif., some 100 miles south of the Oregon border, the National Tsunami Warning Center said.
