United Nations Secretary-General António Guterres on Tuesday strongly condemned the recent terrorist attack in Pahalgam, Jammu and Kashmir, during a phone conversation with India’s External Affairs Minister S. Jaishankar.
The call with EAM Jaishankar came days after the deadly April 22 terror attack in Jammu and Kashmir’s Pahalgam region, which claimed 26 lives and reignited concerns about cross-border terrorism. Guterres expressed solidarity with India and denounced the attack in the strongest terms, backing New Delhi’s demand for accountability.
In a post on social media platform X, EAM Jaishankar confirmed the conversation, stating, “Received a call from United Nations Secretary-General, António Guterres. Appreciate his unequivocal condemnation of the terrorist attack in Pahalgam. Agreed on the importance of accountability. India is resolved that the perpetrators, planners and backers of this attack are brought to justice.”

The UN Chief also held a separate discussion with Pakistan’s Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif, voicing concern over escalating tensions between the two South Asian neighbours.
In its official statement, the United Nations confirmed the Secretary-General’s outreach to both India and Pakistan, reaffirming his “strong condemnation” of the terror incident and expressing “deep concern at rising tensions between India and Pakistan.” Guterres stressed the need for restraint from both sides to prevent a confrontation that could have “tragic consequences.”
Offering the UN’s support for peace efforts, Guterres reiterated his “Good Offices,” a diplomatic channel available to all member states to facilitate dialogue and de-escalation.
