Washington DC: President Donald Trump said that Iran has committed to never acquiring a nuclear weapon under a newly announced understanding between Washington and Tehran, while dismissing reports that the United States would provide Tehran with a massive reconstruction package as part of the arrangement.
In a post on his Truth Social platform, Trump declared that Iran had accepted a key US demand regarding its nuclear ambitions.
“Iran has agreed to never have a Nuclear Weapon!” Trump wrote. He also rejected reports suggesting Washington would provide billions of dollars in direct payments to Tehran, calling such claims “fake news.”
His comments came as questions continued to swirl around the memorandum of understanding reached between the United States and Iran, the contents of which have not yet been made public.
While administration officials have described the agreement as a framework for broader engagement, details concerning the future of Iran’s nuclear program remain unclear. Among the unresolved issues are how compliance will be monitored, which international or national bodies will oversee inspections, and what steps will be taken regarding Iran’s stockpile of highly enriched uranium, some of which is believed to be stored at facilities damaged during U.S. military strikes last year.
Reports circulating in Iranian media have suggested that the memorandum signed last week is only the first step in a broader process. According to those reports, negotiators are expected to spend the next 60 days working toward a comprehensive agreement on Tehran’s nuclear activities.
The emerging framework is believed to include potential sanctions relief, access to frozen Iranian assets and economic incentives tied to Tehran meeting a series of benchmarks. However, Trump cast doubt on reports that a reconstruction fund worth as much as $300 billion would automatically be made available to Iran.
Vice President JD Vance said the administration would release the full text of the memorandum later this week, arguing that concerns about US financial concessions were misplaced.
“Iran doesn’t get a dime of money unless they perform their obligations,” Vance said during an interview with ABC News.
Vance also reiterated the administration’s position that preventing Iran from obtaining a nuclear weapon remains the central objective of the agreement.
In a video message posted on X, he credited Trump’s diplomacy for securing the breakthrough.
“The President has been clear from day one: Iran will never have a nuclear weapon,” Vance said. “Once again, President Trump’s efforts to establish peace have paid off for the American people.”
Senior administration officials said the memorandum establishes a performance-based structure under which sanctions relief and deeper economic engagement would depend on Iran’s cooperation with nuclear inspections, verification requirements and broader regional security commitments.
According to the officials, the extent of future economic benefits would be determined by Tehran’s willingness to demonstrate that it is not pursuing a nuclear weapons program and to curb activities viewed by Washington as destabilizing in the region.
Vance has previously said that sanctions relief would be linked to verifiable actions by Iran, including addressing its enriched uranium stockpiles and accepting a rigorous inspection regime.
Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu also weighed in on the issue, stressing that Israel would continue to oppose any Iranian effort to obtain nuclear weapons regardless of diplomatic developments.
“For decades, I have been fighting Iran’s efforts to acquire nuclear weapons,” Netanyahu said, describing the issue as a defining mission of his political career.
“With or without a deal, Iran will not have nuclear weapons,” he added.
The agreement is expected to be formally signed in Geneva later this week. Switzerland is assisting diplomatic coordination involving the United States, Iran, Pakistan and Qatar.
Trump has described the document as a powerful step toward stability and said its full contents will be released publicly following the signing ceremony.
