Washington DC: The United States has indicated that a breakthrough in talks with Iran over reopening the Strait of Hormuz could be reached soon.
According to sources quoted by reports, US Treasury Secretary Scott Bessent said there is a possibility of an agreement “today or tomorrow” as diplomatic efforts continue to ease tensions in the region.
Bessent said, “We’ve seen President Trump last week threaten what would have been one of the largest military campaigns since World War II against the Iranians. Because of that, we are in talks with the Iranians, and I think there is a chance we may have a deal today or tomorrow to open the Strait and move towards a more normalised position in this conflict.”
He also claimed that Iran’s air force, navy and a significant portion of its missile capabilities had been destroyed.
Meanwhile, Iranian President Masoud Pezeshkian said Tehran is not seeking to escalate regional tensions but will firmly protect its sovereignty. The talks come after President Donald Trump said Iran had been given a “last chance” to reach an agreement through diplomacy.
