Vice President JD Vance arrived at Palam airport today on his first official visit to India.
He has been accompanied by his Indian-origin wife, Usha Vance and their children, as well as senior members of the US administration. A formal meeting between Vance and Prime Minister Modi is scheduled for 6:30 pm today at the Prime Minister’s official residence, 7, Lok Kalyan Marg.
What’s On The Agenda
Vice President Vance plays a key role in the US government. He is also very influential and somebody whose words carry a lot of weight when it comes to US President Donald Trump.
PM Modi met Vance during the summit-level meeting in Washington, DC, with US President Trump; he also met him earlier in Paris.
There is also an India connection. Vadluru in Andhra Pradesh is the ancestral home of Usha Vance, wife of Vice President Vance. There is a close people-to-people relationship that the Vice-President and his family share with India.
Vance’s visit is at a time when India-US trade talks are about to begin. Their discussions can be focused on strengthening economic, trade, and defence cooperation between the two nations.
PM Modi will also thank President Trump for his strong commitment to supporting India in its fight against terrorism. Tahawwur Rana was recently extradited to India by the US administration, who was the key mastermind of the 26/11 terror attacks in Mumbai. There is another Khalistani terrorist who the FBI has detained in the US.
This is a precursor to President Trump’s visit to India, scheduled for September, to attend the QUAD summit.
There are many reports that Indian students’ visas have been cancelled. India will raise this issue that Indian people with Visas, who are working in the US, and who are studying in the US they should not be impacted.
India-US Trade PartnershipÂ
India’s partnership is one of the most consequential partnerships for the Trump administration. This is the signal coming out of the Vice President’s visit to India.
