Kolkata: The Kerala Story, which was released in theatres across the country on Friday amid controversies, has now been banned by the West Bengal government. The movie has faced backlash ever since its trailer emerged.
The decision was announced by West Bengal Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee at the state secretariat. She also accused the BJP of funding a movie on Bengal along the lines of ‘The Kashmir Files’.
Reacting to the announcement of the ban, Banerjee said that the decision was taken to maintain peace and prevent any hate crimes and violence from happening.

Before the ban in West Bengal, many multiplexes across Tamil Nadu also refused to screen the controversial movie, mentioning the law and order issue.
The movie has been controversial and has divided people ever since its trailer came to light. It has also created a political row, with politicians on one side calling it propaganda and on the other side hailing filmmakers for “disclosing the reality.”
Congress MP Shashi Tharoor has also criticized it when the trailer changed from saying “heartbreaking and gut-wrenching stories of 32,000 women” to then changing it into “the true stories of three young girls from different parts of Kerala.” Kerala Chief Minister Pinarayi Vijayan also called it a “propaganda story”.
Prime Minister Narendra Modi had slammed Congress for opposing the film and also accused them of backing the terrorist mindset and brokering a “back door deal” with the supporters of extremism.
Despite all its controversies, the film has made over 35 crores in just three days. Taran Adarsh, a well-known film critic and trade analyst, called it a Smash-Hit at the box office while tweeting its earning statistics.
