Why Trump Presidency May Boost India-US Partnership | NewsMobile Editor-in-Chief Saurabh Shukla Analyses

Date:

Reports indicate that Donald Trump is steadily marching towards the White House. He is a clear favourite to win North Carolina and has a sizeable lead even in Pennsylvania, a key swing state.

It has been an intense and very interesting election. It was earlier predicted that a lot of women voters were expected to vote for the democratic party and vote for Kamala Harris, but that hasn’t happened.

In fact, in Michigan, what has been a turning point, data is indicating that Muslim voters seem to have been backing Donald Trump, which is a big thing.

Indian-American Voting Pattern
As you know, Trump’s running mate, JD Vance’s wife, Usha Vance, is of Indian-American origin. So, there is an Indian connection right there. It’s believed that Usha Vance is the daughter of an Indian immigrant
who grew up in the San Francisco area.

Then there is Vivek Ramaswamy. He has a strong chance of making his way into the trump administration in a responsible position.

We’ve seen that Vivek supported Donald Trump until the end. He probably lost out because Trump had his reasons for wanting JD Vance as his running mate.

Influencers backing Trump and venture funds probably wanted JD Vance to be there. Vivek lost out, but he’ll be a part of the Trump administration in some way.

Former Democratic candidate Tulsi Gabbard joined the Republican Party. Donald Trump realised that she was a good draw at the right time and certainly has swayed many Hindu votes. She recently joined the Trump campaign as an honorary co-chair for the former president’s transition team alongside Robert F Kennedy Junior, another former Democrat.

India-US Relationship

If Donald Trump becomes president, the India partnership will certainly grow. We’ve seen that he has had a great partnership with PM Narendra Modi.

I interviewed Trump on multiple occasions and asked him specific questions on Islamic Fundamentalism, which he answered, and he has been very tough on terrorism. So that is a major rallying point in this trump administration.

If he becomes president, we (India) can convey many of their core concerns. Let’s start with China; he is very clear that China poses a threat to any democracy – he is very firm on that.

On Islamic Terrorism, he is very firm on that. India has been concerned about what’s happening in Jammu and Kashmir in the last few days since the new government was formed. A lot of terrorist attacks have taken place in the region, which is a cause of concern for India.

Any healthy relationship will have agreements and disagreements; I am sure there will be issues of disagreement—maybe on tariffs. We have intelligent people to negotiate that. There will be some give-and-take, and I don’t see any cause for concern.

Trump 2.0

There are people out there who are still sceptical about Donald Trump, but let me say, the fact he has won some of the women voters is because of his moderate stands even on abortion issues.

He has said very clearly that he will not go on a national abortion ban, which was being talked about. He has also distanced himself from a certain project, 2025, which was touted by some as a very extreme agenda.

Trump is a very unpredictable man and maybe an unpredictable president. He will not be like President Joe Biden.

Skilled immigrants in the USA should have a ray of hope. He has spoken about giving green cards to all the college graduates who pass out from US universities, which might not be true as it requires a lot of approvals. However, skilled immigration may be something he may be able to address. Democrats were not able to address it, and that’s the reason why they have lost the support of the Indian-American community in this election.
