World Cup 2023: Shami Fiver Leads India To 302-Run Victory Against Sri Lanka, India Qualify For Semi-Final

Date:

Mumbai: After putting up a 358-run target on board, the men in blue completely demolished the Sri Lankan batting lineup to register a massive 302-run victory at the Wankhede Stadium in Mumbai on Thursday. The fiery Indian bowling attack bowled out Sri Lanka for a mere 55 runs.

India has won all seven of their matches in the 2023 World Cup, and with the recent victory against the Sri Lankan team, the Indian squad has become the first team to reach the semi-finals.

Mohammed Shami, who is only playing his third match in the tournament, secured yet another five-wicket haul, while Mohammed Siraj took three wickets. Jasprit Bumrah and Ravindra Jadeja also chipped in with one wicket each.

Half-centuries from Shubman Gill, Virat Kohli, and Shreyas Iyer helped India post a formidable total of 357 runs against Sri Lanka at the Wankhede Stadium in Mumbai on Thursday.

India faced an early setback as their captain, Rohit Sharma, was dismissed after contributing a mere 4 runs to the scoreboard. However, the Indian team found its footing as the stalwart batsmen Virat Kohli and Shubman Gill combined forces, forging a partnership of 180 plus runs. To further solidify India’s position, Shreyas Iyer’s quick 82-run contribution played a pivotal role in propelling the men in blue to a 350+ total.

Shubman Gill was the highest run scorer for the Indian team, with 92 runs, just eight runs short of his first ODI World Cup century. Meanwhile, Virat Kohli scored 88 runs, missing out with only 12 runs to equal Sachin Tendulkar’s ODI century record. Iyer contributed with 82 runs off just 56 balls.

Meanwhile, only Dilshan Madushanka managed to trouble the Indian batsmen, securing a five-wicket haul, while Dushmantha Chameera contributed with one wicket.

Earlier, Sri Lanka’s captain, Kusal Mendis, won the toss during the World Cup 2023 clash at Wankhede Stadium on Thursday, and opted to bowl. India maintains the victorious lineup, while Sri Lanka introduces one change, with Dushan Hemantha replacing Dhananjaya de Silva.
