3 Indian-Origin Candidates Among Finalists For Oxford Chancellor’s Post

Date:

The prestigious University of Oxford announced its final list of candidates for the upcoming Chancellor election, naming 38 contenders who will vie for the highly respected ceremonial position. Among the finalists are three Indian-origin candidates, while former Pakistani Prime Minister Imran Khan, an Oxford alumnus, has been excluded from the list.

The candidates, who come from diverse backgrounds in academia, politics, and business, will compete to succeed Lord Chris Patten, who will step down after 21 years as Chancellor at the end of Trinity Term 2024.

Among the finalists are Ankur Shiv Bhandari, the first Indian-origin Mayor of Bracknell Forest, Professor Nirpal Singh Paul Bhangal, an expert in international entrepreneurship, and medical professional Dr. Pratik Tarvadi. These three Indian-origin contenders are joined by prominent British politicians such as former Conservative Party leader Lord William Hague and former Labour politician Lord Peter Mandelson.

The election process, overseen by the University’s Convocation, will begin with an online voting phase on October 28, where faculty and alumni will rank the candidates. The five leading candidates from this round will be announced on November 4, moving forward to a second round of voting set for November 18. The final result, declaring Oxford’s new Chancellor, will be revealed on November 25.

Each of the shortlisted candidates brings a unique perspective to the role. Ankur Shiv Bhandari described the university as a “beacon of history and learning” and said that becoming Chancellor would be the highlight of his career.

Professor Bhangal emphasized his deep understanding of Oxford’s global standing and his extensive experience in bridging academia and international business, while Dr. Tarvadi stressed the importance of inclusivity and innovation, stating his vision to expand Oxford’s impact worldwide through collaborative efforts.

Oxford’s Chancellor, while a ceremonial role, holds significant influence, overseeing important university functions, including degree ceremonies, and playing a key part in the selection of the Vice-Chancellor. The Chancellor is also a public face for the university in international engagements and major fundraising efforts.
