A total of 45 Indian nationals who were illegally forced to join the Russian military and fight in the ongoing war against Ukraine have been discharged from service, as confirmed by the Ministry of External Affairs (MEA). Several of these individuals have already returned to India, with more expected to follow soon.
MEA spokesperson Randhir Jaiswal confirmed the rescue. “Several of them have come back. Six of them came back two days ago and several others would be shortly coming back,” Jaiswal said.
However, 50 more Indian nationals are still on the frontlines in the Russia-Ukraine conflict. Jaiswal highlighted the Indian government is actively working to secure their release and safe return.

During his visit to Moscow in July, Prime Minister Narendra Modi raised the issue with President Vladimir Putin following which Russia decided to discharge all Indians working in the Russian army.
