6,000 NRIs From 75 Countries To Attend Pravasi Bharatiya Divas Convention In Odisha

Date:

Bhubaneswar, the capital of Odisha, has become the focal point of global celebrations as the 18th Pravasi Bharatiya Divas (PBD) commenced on Wednesday. The three-day convention has brought together nearly 6,000 non-resident Indians (NRIs) from 75 countries, including business leaders, scholars, economists, and thought leaders. This year’s theme, “Diaspora’s Contribution to a Viksit Bharat”, underscores the critical role of the Indian diaspora in shaping India’s future.

Pravasi Bharatiya Divas holds special significance in India’s cultural and diplomatic calendar. Established in 2003, the event is celebrated annually on January 9 to honor the day Mahatma Gandhi returned to India in 1915 after his years abroad. Gandhi’s return marked the beginning of India’s freedom struggle, and PBD seeks to channel the same spirit of connection and contribution among overseas Indians.

This year’s event goes beyond celebrating contributions—it aims to strengthen bonds. It provides a platform for the government to engage with the global Indian community on key issues and policy initiatives, fostering partnerships for India’s development. Prime Minister Narendra Modi will officially inaugurate the event on January 9, with a packed agenda of activities designed to highlight India’s growing engagement with its diaspora.

A major highlight of this year’s celebrations is the unveiling of the Pravasi Bharatiya Express, a dedicated tourist train for overseas Indians. As part of the Pravasi Teertha Darshan Yojana, the train will offer diaspora members a chance to explore India’s cultural and spiritual heritage through visits to iconic destinations. This unique initiative reflects the government’s efforts to deepen cultural ties with Indians abroad while promoting tourism.

The convention will also feature discussions, exhibitions, and networking opportunities, showcasing India’s advancements in trade, culture, technology, and diplomacy. The Pravasi Bharatiya Divas convention serves multiple objectives, including fostering collaboration between India and its diaspora. It recognizes the contributions of overseas Indians in shaping India’s image and progress on the global stage, while also addressing their concerns and aspirations.

Key discussions during the event will focus on investment opportunities in India, community welfare programs, visa and immigration policies, and the role of the diaspora in international relations. The convention provides an avenue for meaningful dialogue and collaboration, helping bridge the gap between India and its global citizens.

Hosting this landmark event, Bhubaneswar is poised to showcase the rich cultural and historical heritage of Odisha. The city, known for its vibrant traditions and modern outlook, offers the perfect setting for a convention that celebrates the fusion of India’s ancient roots and global aspirations.
