Abhay Kumar has been appointed as India’s next Ambassador to Georgia, the Ministry of External Affairs (MEA) announced on Monday. Kumar, who is currently the Deputy Director General at the Indian Council for Cultural Relations (ICCR), is set to assume his new role soon.
A 2003 batch Indian Foreign Service (IFS) officer, Kumar’s appointment comes at a time when India is further enhancing its diplomatic engagement with Georgia. Diplomatic relations between the two countries were formalized in 1992, after India recognized Georgia’s independence following the dissolution of the Soviet Union.
India’s Embassy in Tbilisi, which became operational in 2024, represents a new phase in bilateral relations. Currently, the Ambassador to Armenia, who resides in Yerevan, is also concurrently accredited to Georgia.
Georgia, which had established an Honorary Consulate in Delhi in 2005, elevated its diplomatic mission to a full-fledged embassy in 2009, with the first Resident Ambassador arriving in India in 2010.
