Abu Dhabi witnessed a historic moment on Monday as Sheikh Khaled bin Mohamed bin Zayed Al Nahyan, the Crown Prince of Abu Dhabi, officially inaugurated the Abu Dhabi campus of the Indian Institute of Technology Delhi (IIT Delhi).
The inauguration was highlighted by the welcoming of the first batch of undergraduate students, who will be pursuing degrees in Computer Science and Engineering, as well as Energy Engineering. This inaugural class, consisting of 52 students, represents a diverse mix of Indian, Emirati, and international students.
The establishment of the IIT Delhi Abu Dhabi campus is a key component of the Vision Document launched by Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi and UAE President Sheikh Mohamed bin Zayed Al Nahyan in February 2022. The document outlines a roadmap for deepening the India-UAE partnership across various sectors, with education being a cornerstone of this expanded collaboration.
Admissions to the undergraduate programs at IIT Delhi Abu Dhabi were highly competitive, with students being selected through the Joint Entrance Examination (JEE) Advanced, a rigorous test traditionally used for admission to IITs in India. Additionally, a newly introduced Combined Admission Entrance Test (CAET) was implemented specifically to accommodate international students.
Before the undergraduate programs, the Abu Dhabi campus had already begun its academic journey with the launch of its first Master of Technology (M.Tech) program in Energy Transition and Sustainability in January 2024. This master’s program has already garnered significant attention, with the inaugural cohort having had the opportunity to meet Prime Minister Modi during his visit to Abu Dhabi earlier this year.
India and the UAE have been working closely to ensure that the IIT Delhi Abu Dhabi campus meets the highest standards of education and infrastructure. The campus, which was still under construction during a visit by India’s Minister of Education in November 2023, has now blossomed into a state-of-the-art facility, surrounded by beautifully landscaped grounds.
Accompanied by Sunjay Sudhir, the Ambassador of India to the UAE, Prof. Dr. Rangan Banerjee, Director of IIT Delhi, and several Emirati dignitaries, the Crown Prince toured the new campus.
