Mumbai: Bollywood actor Alia Bhatt has expressed concern over the devastating floods in Assam, urging immediate relief assistance and long-term support for affected communities as the state continues to face severe flood conditions.
Sharing her thoughts, Alia said the floods have affected several parts of India, with Assam among the worst-hit regions. She highlighted the scale of the disaster, stating that more than 60 lives have been lost, lakhs of people displaced, and many families have lost homes, land, livestock and loved ones.
The actor noted that recurring floods in Assam happen every year but still catch people unprepared. She stressed the need for urgent help and sustained efforts for recovery, and said she would share ways for people to contribute towards relief work.
According to official data, floods have affected 3,32,639 people across 622 villages in 21 revenue circles of Assam. The death toll has risen to 75, with seven more fatalities reported from Sivasagar district on Tuesday.
Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma announced additional relief measures, including an extra ₹5 lakh from the CM Relief Fund for families of flood victims, taking the total assistance to ₹9 lakh. Families of people missing for over 30 days will also be eligible for ₹4 lakh ex-gratia.
The DRIMS report said 45,341.98 hectares of agricultural land have been submerged, while the Dhansiri River at Numaligarh is flowing above the danger level.
