Arshdeep Singh Fined After T20 World Cup Final Incident

Date:

Just days after India’s historic victory in the ICC Men’s T20 World Cup 2026 final, Indian fast bowler Arshdeep Singh has been fined by the International Cricket Council for breaching the ICC Code of Conduct during the summit clash against New Zealand national cricket team. The incident took place at the Narendra Modi Stadium, where India defeated New Zealand by 96 runs to secure their third T20 World Cup title.
According to an ICC statement, Arshdeep was fined 15 percent of his match fee and handed one demerit point for a Level 1 offence under Article 2.9 of the ICC Code of Conduct. The rule relates to “throwing a ball (or any other cricket equipment) at or near a player in an inappropriate and/or dangerous manner during an international match.” The disciplinary action was imposed by match referee Andy Pycroft.

Incident During New Zealand Innings
The incident occurred during the 11th over of New Zealand’s innings when Arshdeep fielded the ball and threw it back toward the pitch, unintentionally hitting New Zealand batter Daryl Mitchell on the body. The moment sparked tension on the field as Mitchell reacted angrily and briefly exchanged words with the Indian pacer.
On-field umpires quickly stepped in to calm the situation, while India’s captain Suryakumar Yadav also played a key role in defusing the confrontation. The situation did not escalate further, and both players eventually shook hands later in the match.

Arshdeep Apologises for the Incident
Following the match, Arshdeep clarified that the throw was not intentional and that he had apologised to Mitchell immediately after the incident.
“I went to say sorry to Mitchell. My throw reverse-swung a bit too much and it hit his body, so I told him I didn’t hit him intentionally,” he said during the post-match presentation.
The ICC confirmed that Arshdeep accepted the sanction proposed by the match referee, which means there will be no formal hearing regarding the incident.

India’s Dominant Victory
Despite the brief controversy, the final itself was a dominant performance by the India national cricket team. Half-centuries from Abhishek Sharma, Ishan Kishan, and Sanju Samson powered India to a massive total of 255 runs.
The victory sealed India’s third T20 World Cup title, further cementing their dominance in the shortest format of the game.
