Ahead of the much-anticipated five-match Border-Gavaskar Trophy series against India, Australia announced a 13-player squad on Sunday, which includes Nathan McSweeney and Josh Inglis as the new faces for the opening Test in Perth, scheduled to begin on November 22.
McSweeney is expected to make his Test debut in the series opener, alongside Inglis, who joins as a reserve batter and backup wicketkeeper. While the squad largely features familiar faces, the inclusion of McSweeney and Inglis highlights Australia’s strategic depth ahead of a crucial series.
Alex Carey, who continues to shine with the bat in the Sheffield Shield, is set to keep wickets, and his recent form with two centuries and a fifty makes him a vital asset. Inglis, who has impressed with the bat, adds further versatility as a reserve batter, and he currently ranks fourth among the Shield’s top run-scorers, just ahead of McSweeney.
Pat Cummins will continue to lead the pace attack, with Josh Hazlewood and Mitchell Starc also in the mix, while Scott Boland provides additional pace options. Nathan Lyon, Australia’s premier spinner, remains the only specialist spin option, with Marnus Labuschagne and Travis Head available as backup slow-bowling options if needed.
Australian Squad for Perth Test: Pat Cummins (C), Travis Head, Usman Khawaja, Nathan McSweeney, Steve Smith, Marnus Labuschagne, Mitch Marsh, Alex Carey, Josh Inglis, Mitchell Starc, Josh Hazlewood, Nathan Lyon, Scott Boland
