BCCI Tightens IPL Rules, Restricts Movement of Benched Players

Date:

New Delhi: The Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) has introduced strict new regulations during the ongoing IPL 2026 season, significantly limiting the movement of benched players and non-playing squad members.

Under the revised Match Playing Conditions, only 16 players named in the official team sheet are allowed on the field. Substitutes outside this group are barred from entering the playing area, including for duties such as carrying drinks, delivering bats, or passing messages.

Additionally, only five non-playing members are permitted near the boundary at any time, while others must remain seated in the dugout and avoid restricted zones between the boundary and LED boards.

The rule expands on clauses 11.5.2 and 24.1.4, which govern drinks distribution and attire for non-playing members. New seating regulations also prohibit players and staff from occupying areas in front of LED advertising boards to prevent damage and protect sponsorship visibility.

Further measures include mandatory team bus travel, a ban on match-day practice on the main pitch, and restricted use of training facilities.

Dress code rules now prohibit sleeveless jerseys during presentations, while Orange and Purple Cap holders must wear their caps early in matches.

Support staff are limited to 12 members, and family access remains confined to designated hospitality areas.
