Washington DC: US President Joe Biden promoted a US-backed ceasefire agreement in Gaza during his speech to Muslims on Eid al-Adha on Sunday. He said that it was the best way to help the civilians suffering the horrors of war between Israel and Hamas.
As per AFP, Joe Biden in a statement said that too many innocent people have been killed, including thousands of children. Many Families have fled their homes and seen their communities being destroyed. Their pain is immense. Biden also added that he strongly believes the three-phase ceasefire proposal proposed by Israel to Hamas and endorsed by the UN Security Council is the best way to end this war.
The US has continuously pressured Israel and Hamas to formally accept the Ceasefire deal which was approved by the UN Security Council members last week and initially would allow a six-week pause to the fighting. A rare day of relative calm occurred in Gaza on Eid al-Adha, the day that commemorates the prophet Ibrahim’s willingness to sacrifice his son to God when Israel declared a “tactical pause” in the combat near Rafah to allow humanitarian supplies.
Biden highlighted America’s efforts to advocate the rights of other Muslim communities facing persecution which includes the Rohingyas in Myanmar and the Uyghurs in China. As per AFP, Biden also said that they are working to get a peaceful resolution to the horrific conflict in Sudan which has been gripped by fighting between the country’s army and a rival paramilitary group since April 2023.
At home, Biden promised a crackdown on Islamophobia in a direct appeal to American Muslims which is also a major voting demograph for the President in his re-election bid against Republican rival Donald Trump. According to AFP Biden also said, “My Administration is creating a national strategy to counter Islamophobia and related forms of bias and discrimination, which affect not only Muslims, but also Arab, Sikh, and South Asian Americans”.
