Bullies blocked on Instagram; new feature hides mean comments

Date:

Coming strong against cyberbullying, Facebook-owned photo-sharing platform, Instagram, will now block out mean comments from bullies posting on your photos.

Instagram co‑founder Kevin Systrom said the change was part of an “ongoing commitment to keeping Instagram an inclusive, supportive place for all voices.”

The feature will be turned on by default, so you’ll have to go into your settings to turn it off.

“This new filter hides comments containing attacks on a person’s appearance or character,” explained Systrom.

He added that it would also hide “threats to a person’s well-being or health.”

The new change goes live today.

To turn it off, you’ll need to go into your app settings and scroll down to Comment Controls.

Instagram said that it’ll be receiving alerts about “repeated problems” and may “take action” against serial bullies.

“Since Mike [Krieger] and I founded Instagram, it’s been our goal to make it a safe place for self-expression and to foster kindness within the community,” said Systrom.

“This update is just the next step in our mission to deliver on that promise.”
