An 18-year-old from Chunabhatti and his group of friends became victims of a cyber scam as they got duped of Rs 2.2 lakh while attempting to purchase Coldplay concert tickets online for their January 2025 show. According to the FIR, the teenager initially bought one ticket for Rs 7,000 via UPI after discovering a number that seemed reliable on the internet. When more friends wanted to join, the group decided to book 24 tickets in total, paying Rs 2.17 lakh. However, they later found out that the tickets were fake.
The scammers even sent a confirmation email from ‘confirmation@book-my-show.co,’ a spoofed email designed to look like the official BookMyShow domain. The fraud came to light when a relative noticed irregularities in the email. Realizing they had been duped, the group promptly reported the matter to the police.
At the same time, the Economic Offences Wing (EOW) initiated a preliminary investigation after advocate Amit Vyas lodged a complaint against BookMyShow, alleging ticket scalping. In response, BookMyShow itself also registered a complaint at the Vile Parle police station, targeting unknown individuals involved in reselling tickets illegally.
With the Coldplay concert scheduled for January 18, 19, and 21 at DY Patil Stadium in Navi Mumbai, the high demand for tickets has led to a surge in black-market sales and scams. Many fans took to social media to vent their frustration over the difficulties in obtaining tickets and the rising prices, pushing authorities to take action.
