Delhi-NCR To See Week-Long Thunderstorms; IMD Issues Rain Forecast

Date:

New Delhi: Delhi-NCR is set to experience a week of thunderstorms and rainfall, according to the India Meteorological Department (IMD). The Met department has also forecast that temperatures in the capital will remain below 40°C until June 5, offering continued relief from intense summer heat.

On Tuesday, Delhi recorded a maximum temperature of 37.7°C, which is 2.3°C below normal, with no rainfall reported. The recent spell of relatively mild weather has provided some respite to residents. In a broader climate update, the World Meteorological Organisation (WMO) said that El Nino conditions are developing due to unusually warm tropical Pacific waters, which may influence global temperature and rainfall patterns and increase the likelihood of extreme weather in the coming months.

In the Himalayan region, a fresh western disturbance is expected to affect Himachal Pradesh from the evening of June 3 to June 6. The IMD reported light to moderate rainfall in several parts over the past 24 hours, with thunderstorms in districts including Chamba, Kangra, Kullu, Mandi, Solan, and Shimla.

No significant weather activity is expected on June 2, while isolated rainfall with thunderstorms is likely on June 4 and 5.

Meanwhile, Rajasthan also saw relief from heat as thunderstorms brought down maximum temperatures. Phalodi was the hottest at 42.2°C, followed by Sri Ganganagar at 41.4°C, Bikaner at 41.2°C, and Jaisalmer at 40.5°C. A heatwave is defined as a maximum temperature of 45°C or more for at least two consecutive days.
