New Delhi: Delhi was placed under a red alert on Tuesday as heavy rain lashed several parts of the capital and adjoining NCR areas, triggering severe waterlogging and traffic disruptions. The IMD warned of more rain, thunderstorms, lightning and gusty winds over the next two to three hours.
The weather department said winds could reach 40-50 kmph, with gusts up to 60 kmph. Heavy showers were reported in Parliament Street, Connaught Place, AIIMS, ITO, RK Puram, Ferozeshah Road, Ashoka Road and near the Supreme Court.
Flight operations at Delhi’s Indira Gandhi International Airport were also affected. According to Flightradar24, 16 flights were cancelled and 132 delayed due to the adverse weather.
Gurugram and Faridabad were under a yellow alert, while Noida remained heavily clouded. On Monday, 26 flights were cancelled, 15 diverted and more than 390 delayed amid severe weather.
Delhi’s rainfall remained above normal, with Safdarjung recording 246.2 mm till August 24, 29% above normal.
The IMD attributed the intense showers to the interaction of a western disturbance with a lower-tropospheric trough.
Rain is expected to ease from Wednesday, with no significant showers forecast from August 26 to 30. Maximum temperatures may rise to 35-37°C.
