New Delhi: After days of relentless heat, parts of the national capital region witnessed a sudden shift in weather on Thursday evening as a dust storm accompanied by lightning swept across Delhi, Haryana, and western Uttar Pradesh.
The India Meteorological Department (IMD) said the impact of the storm is expected to continue until 9 p.m. Strong winds and reduced visibility disrupted daily life in several areas, bringing momentary relief from the heat but triggering concerns over damage to crops and property.

“Strong winds may damage vulnerable structures and standing crops,” the weather office said in a statement. “People are advised to stay indoors and avoid travel unless necessary.”
Authorities issued a safety advisory, urging residents not to take shelter under trees, lie on concrete floors, or lean against concrete walls during the storm. “Unplug electrical appliances and immediately get out of water bodies,” the IMD warned.
The sudden change in weather follows a prolonged spell of extreme temperatures that pushed the mercury above 40 degrees Celsius in several parts of northern India. While the gusty winds offered brief respite, the storm left behind dusty skies and disrupted power lines in some localities.
No casualties or major damage had been reported at the time of filing this report.
