A powerful earthquake with a magnitude of 6.1 struck off the east coast of Hokkaido, Japan, on Saturday afternoon, according to the Japan Meteorological Agency (JMA). The tremor occurred at a depth of approximately 20 kilometers (12 miles) beneath the Earth’s surface.
The seismic event rattled parts of Japan’s northernmost island but, fortunately, no tsunami warning was issued following the quake. Authorities confirmed that the epicentre was located offshore, minimizing the risk of widespread inland damage.
As of now, there have been no immediate reports of injuries or structural damage. Japan lies along the Pacific “Ring of Fire,” making it one of the most seismically active regions in the world.
Further details are awaited.
