England all-rounder Moeen Ali has officially retired from international cricket, bringing an end to a remarkable career that spanned from 2014 to 2024. Moeen’s decision follows his last appearance for England in the ICC Men’s T20 World Cup 2024 and comes after realizing he was no longer a part of England’s future plans.
In an interview with former England captain Nasser Hussain, Moeen explained his choice, stating, “I’m 37 years old and didn’t get picked for this month’s Australia series. I’ve played a lot of cricket for England. It’s time for the next generation, which was also explained to me. It felt the time was right. I’ve done my part.”
Having featured in 298 international matches, Moeen leaves behind an impressive legacy. With 6678 runs and 366 wickets across all formats, the 37-year-old played a pivotal role in several of England’s most significant victories, including their 2019 ICC Cricket World Cup win and the 2022 ICC Men’s T20 World Cup triumph.
He made his international debut against West Indies in 2014 and quickly established himself as a versatile player for England. Though Moeen started as a batting all-rounder, he developed into one of England’s leading spinners in Test cricket. His 204 Test wickets place him third on England’s all-time spinner list, behind legends Derek Underwood (297) and Graeme Swann (255).
