Argentina midfielder Enzo Fernandez has signed a contract with Manchester City until 2031, the Premier League club announced.
Fernandez joins City after a successful spell with Chelsea from 2023 to 2026, during which he won the UEFA Conference League and FIFA Club World Cup in 2025.
The 25-year-old began his senior career in Argentina with Defensa y Justicia and River Plate, winning four major trophies with the latter. He then moved to Benfica for the 2022-23 season, helping the Portuguese club win the Primeira Liga.
Fernandez established himself as one of the Premier League’s finest midfielders during his time at Chelsea.
At international level, Fernandez has won the FIFA World Cup in 2022 and Copa America in 2024 with Argentina. He also featured in Argentina’s 2026 FIFA World Cup final against Spain, where they finished runners-up.
On joining Manchester City, Fernandez said he was delighted to take on the challenge of helping the club win more trophies.
“Manchester City are the most successful club in England in recent times. Every player wants to be part of a club like this because everyone knows how well-run City are,” he said in a club statement.
“I could not be happier to be here, and I am ready for the challenge of helping City continue winning trophies. This is a club built for success.”
Fernandez added that he was looking forward to learning from his new teammates and continuing to improve his game.
“I pride myself on continually improving my game. Anyone who has worked with me will know how hard I train every single day and how much I put into matches. I give absolutely everything, and I can promise Manchester City that will continue now I am here,” he said.
City Director of Football Hugo Viana described Fernandez as a “complete midfielder”, praising his technical ability, work ethic and versatility.
“To have played in two World Cup finals and won major trophies in multiple countries at just 25 says everything you need to know about his mentality, professionalism and technical quality,” Viana said.
“We are delighted to bring him here and feel very strongly he will improve our team.”
