Explained: Why Lionel Messi Is Not Playing Football During His India Tour

Date:

Lionel Messi’s arrival in India this weekend has stirred memories, emotions and long-held dreams among football fans — not of goals scored on Indian soil, but of witnessing, up close, a once-in-a-generation icon whose career has already crossed into legend.

The World Cup winner landed on Saturday for a carefully curated three-day tour across Kolkata, Hyderabad, Mumbai and New Delhi, a visit defined more by moments of connection than by action on the pitch.

The 38-year-old footballer is in India for a series of meet-and-greet events and public appearances, where he is expected to share the stage with prominent figures from sport, business and culture. However, for fans hoping to see Messi play a full-fledged football match, that hope is unlikely to be realised during this visit.

According to media reports, Messi will not take part in any exhibition or competitive game during the tour, with insurance considerations playing a decisive role. Widely regarded as one of the most valuable athletes in the history of sport, Messi is said to hold one of the most expensive insurance policies in the world. Reports have previously claimed that his famed left foot alone was insured for up to $900 million.

Such insurance policies are designed to protect athletes from catastrophic financial loss arising from career-threatening injuries. However, they also come with strict limitations. Matches played outside official club or international commitments — including exhibition games — are typically not covered. Any injury sustained in such a setting could jeopardise compensation worth hundreds of millions of dollars.

Messi, who represents Argentina internationally and plays club football for Major League Soccer side Inter Miami, has no scheduled fixtures in India during this period. As a result, the insurance terms effectively rule out participation in any match on Indian soil.

In contrast, sporting history offers rare exceptions. Legendary basketball player Michael Jordan famously had a “Love of the Game” clause in his contract with the Chicago Bulls. The clause allowed him to play basketball anytime, anywhere, and with anyone — without prior permission. Even if Jordan had been injured during such informal games, his contract guaranteed continued payment.

No such clause has ever been reported in connection with Messi’s insurance arrangements.

For Indian fans, Messi’s visit is not about ninety minutes of football, but about witnessing a living chapter of sporting history — a reminder that greatness, once achieved, carries its own fragility. In that sense, this tour feels less like a spectacle and more like a quiet homage to a career that has already given the world everything it had to offer.
