Faizan Zaki, a 13-year-old from Allen, Texas, clinched the 2025 Scripps National Spelling Bee title on Thursday evening after correctly spelling “éclaircissement,” a French noun meaning “clarification.”
His victory came at the end of an intense 21-round finale at the Gaylord National Resort and Convention Centre in National Harbor, Maryland, marking the centennial edition of the prestigious competition.
Zaki’s path to the championship wasn’t flawless. In the early stages of the Bee, he made an uncharacteristic error with the word “commelina,” a genus of flowering plants. Departing from the typical routine followed by seasoned spellers, Zaki rushed through the word without asking for its language of origin or definition. The slip-up stunned the audience and momentarily rattled him.
“I was amazed—I couldn’t believe I made that mistake,” he later admitted.
But the misstep proved to be a turning point. Rather than faltering, Zaki regrouped and delivered a flawless performance for the rest of the competition. His poise and mental resilience became increasingly evident as the rounds progressed and the difficulty level rose.
This year’s Bee featured 243 finalists from across the United States and international locations including Nigeria, Kuwait, Canada, and Puerto Rico. Zaki’s win extended a long-standing trend of Indian-American dominance at the event. Sarvadnya Kadam of Visalia, California, and Sarv Dharavane of Dunwoody, Georgia, secured second and third place, respectively.
A familiar name in spelling circles, Zaki had finished as the runner-up in the 2024 edition. In preparation for this year’s contest, he devoted up to 40 hours a week to study sessions. “I’ve wished for this forever,” he said after hoisting the coveted Scripps Cup.
Alongside the trophy, Zaki received a $50,000 cash prize, a commemorative medal, and additional awards from Merriam-Webster, Encyclopedia Britannica, and Scholastic.
The 2025 Bee celebrated its 100th anniversary by honouring its legacy while embracing its growing global reach. In the end, it was Zaki’s unshakable focus, rigorous preparation, and ability to bounce back from early adversity that defined his championship run.
