The film is directed by Rakeysh Omprakash Mishra, featuring Farhan Akhtar as Indian-National Boxer with Mrunal Thakur as Pooja Shah and Paresh Rawal as his coach. The film presents the story of a goon from the streets of Dongri in context with boxing, his fall and a victorious comeback overcoming all odds in his life.
Earlier the film was announced to hit the big screen in theatre on 2nd October 2020 but due to the spread of the COVID-19 pandemic in India, the release was indefinitely delayed. Later, it was announced to release on May 21 on the streaming platform Amazon Prime Video but was postponed again due to the massive second wave of coronavirus.
In May, Farhan Akhtar in a statement wrote, “The situation in India is truly heart-breaking, and we at Excel Entertainment and ROMP Pictures send our thoughts and prayers to everyone affected by the pandemic. In light of the severity of the situation, our focus is completely on the pandemic and on supporting our employees, their families and helping the wider community. Therefore, we have taken the decision to postpone the release of our film ‘Toofaan’ until the situation improves. We will issue an update regarding the new release date in due course of time.”
