NEW DELHI: Delhi Capitals’ David Miller faced criticism after his last-over misstep against Gujarat Titans cost DC a one-run defeat in the IPL. The middle-order batter refused a single on the penultimate ball, leaving tailender Kuldeep Yadav stranded, and failed to connect with the final delivery from Prasidh Krishna. This led to Kuldeep’s run-out and handed GT their first win of the season.
India legend Sunil Gavaskar, speaking to Star Sports, defended Miller, emphasizing his confidence and recent form. “He was backing himself to hit the winning runs,” Gavaskar said. “In hindsight, he might have given Kuldeep the strike, but he believed he could do it, and you can’t fault him for that. Prasidh Krishna bowled an absolutely superb delivery.”
Former England captain Kevin Pietersen also voiced support for Miller, noting the batter’s mindset was to secure at least a single or attempt a big hit. “He thought from that final delivery, I’ll definitely get one. Best case, two, three, four, five, six,” Pietersen said, highlighting Miller’s overall contribution in taking DC close to victory.
Miller’s decision sparked debate over endgame strategies in high-pressure IPL chases, but both Gavaskar and Pietersen stressed the batter’s confidence and skill should not overshadow the unfortunate result.
