In a thrilling encounter at the World Chess Championship, Indian Grandmaster D Gukesh secured his first win against defending champion Ding Liren, leveling the score at 1.5 points each after three games. The 18-year-old chess prodigy showcased his brilliance by outmaneuvering the Chinese Grandmaster in a tense third game that lasted 37 moves.
Gukesh’s precise opening and calculated moves allowed him to gain a commanding time advantage early in the game. By move 13, Gukesh had managed to spend just four minutes on his moves, while Ding had used up over an hour. This put immense pressure on Ding, who struggled to find a response as the game unfolded into a complex middle phase.
Gukesh’s preparation paid off as he expertly maneuvered his pieces, forcing Ding into a corner and securing a well-deserved victory after 37 moves.
Earlier in the match, Gukesh had rebounded from a loss in the first game to draw the second. Playing with black pieces, he held his ground against Ding, who could do little with his white pieces. The second game was a tense affair, but Gukesh’s resilience saw him earn a valuable point, keeping the series alive.
As the youngest-ever challenger for the World Chess Championship, Gukesh is determined to make history and become the first Indian since Viswanathan Anand to claim the coveted title.
