Heavy Rain Triggers High Alert in Uttarakhand as Rivers Cross Warning Levels, Roads Blocked

Date:

Uttarakhand: Continuous rainfall in Uttarakhand has pushed several rivers, including the Alaknanda, Mandakini and Bhagirathi, to warning and danger levels, prompting authorities to intensify preparedness measures across the state.

According to the Central Water Commission, the Alaknanda river at Rudraprayag was flowing at its danger level of 627 metres and continued to rise. The Mandakini was recorded at 626.20 metres, 0.20 metres above its danger mark. The Bhagirathi at Devprayag was flowing at the warning level of 462 metres, while the Raisi (Banganga) river in Haridwar was slightly above its warning level.

Rudraprayag District Disaster Management Officer Nandan Singh Rajwar directed officials to remain on high alert and issue warnings through loudspeakers to people living near riverbanks, advising them to move to safer locations.

Heavy rainfall also disrupted connectivity, with the Badrinath National Highway blocked near Helang in Chamoli due to debris.

The Gangotri National Highway was closed near Dharasu Nalupani in Uttarkashi, while the Yamunotri National Highway faced blockages at multiple locations due to landslides.

Schools up to Class 12 were closed in Dehradun, Chamoli and Bageshwar districts. Chief Minister Pushkar Singh Dhami reviewed the situation and instructed agencies to remain prepared.

Disaster Management Secretary Vinod Kumar Suman said the IMD had issued an orange alert for heavy rain in Dehradun, Chamoli and Bageshwar, while a yellow alert was issued for other districts.
