The India Meteorological Department (IMD) has forecast persistent heavy rainfall across several regions of northwest and central India over the next few days, raising concerns of potential flooding and waterlogging in vulnerable areas.
In its latest bulletin, the IMD warned that states including Himachal Pradesh, Jammu, Punjab, Haryana, and western Uttar Pradesh are set to witness very heavy rainfall today, while the monsoon system continues to strengthen over the region. Uttarakhand is predicted to experience heavy showers on July 13, and western Rajasthan could face intense rainfall on July 14.
The wet spell will extend over central India as well. East Rajasthan and western Madhya Pradesh are expected to receive significant rainfall between July 11 and 14, while eastern Madhya Pradesh is likely to be impacted earlier, from July 10 to 12.
In the national capital, the weather is set to remain unsettled. For today, the IMD has forecast a generally cloudy sky over Delhi-NCR with light to moderate showers in most parts and heavy rainfall in some isolated pockets. Thunderstorms and lightning are also expected to accompany the rain.
Interestingly, the downpour will keep daytime temperatures much cooler than normal. Today’s maximum temperature is likely to hover between 28°C and 30°C, nearly 6 to 8 degrees below the seasonal average.
On July 11, Delhi could see a slight let-up, with very light to light rain coupled with thunderstorms. Day temperatures are expected to climb to 33–35°C, but will still remain below average for this time of year, while the minimum temperature will range from 23°C to 25°C.
The following two days, July 12 and 13, are expected to bring partly cloudy skies and intermittent light rainfall. Thunderstorms may occur occasionally, with daytime temperatures rising to 34–36°C. Night temperatures will remain near or slightly below normal.
