Horn okay? Chandigarh says no please

Date:

Unnecessary honking causes annoyance as well as disturbance to fellow commuters and the elderly, and the UT police has taken a serious note of it. In a bid to make the roads of Chandigarh honk-free, the city police has initiated a drive wherein it will first sensitise the motorists and subsequently issue challan. The drive was launched this Thursday.

This will make Chandigarh the first honk free city.

The traffic police is stopping the people who excessively blow the horn and are pasting ‘I will not honk’ stickers on their vehicles’ steering wheels so that they exercise restraint the next time.  The police has plans to target around 5,000 vehicles and make the motorists aware about noise pollution. The traffic police will also take stern action against motorists who have installed modified horns in their vehicles.

In its first leg, the drive has been initiated in 5 sectors of the city- 1, 2, 3, 5 and 12. The police will challan the offenders in these sectors with a fine of 1000 rupees.  In the second leg, the police will begin to challan people in 9 other sectors and then the whole city will be brought under the ambit.

It is to be noted that blowing horn is already banned in silence zones comprising Sector 1 Capital Complex, Sector 12, Sector 14 (Panjab University), and area encircling 100 metres around all hospitals, educational institutions, courts and religious places.
