India-US Trade Deal Near Completion, Says US Envoy Sergio Gor

Date:

India and the United States are nearing the finalisation of their proposed trade agreement, with only a small issue left to be resolved, according to US envoy to India Sergio Gor.

Speaking at Citi’s 2026 India Conference on Wednesday, Gor said both countries were working to resolve the remaining “one per cent” sticking point and were hopeful of completing the agreement within the next several weeks.

Gor said a US trade delegation is currently in India for discussions on the proposed agreement. His remarks came as senior negotiators from both countries began a three-day round of talks in New Delhi on Tuesday to finalise the details of the proposed interim trade deal.

The framework for the agreement was finalised in February. The US delegation is being led by chief negotiator Brendan Lynch, while India’s chief negotiator is Darpan Jain, Additional Secretary in the Department of Commerce.

According to Gor, the broad framework of the trade deal has already been established, with negotiators now concentrating on resolving the final one per cent of outstanding issues before the agreement is formally signed.

Expressing confidence about the progress of the talks, Gor said both sides remain optimistic about reaching a conclusion soon.

“We are very hopeful that that will get accomplished over the next weeks, several weeks, but it’s not going to be years. We are very close to getting that done,” Gor said.

During the conference, Gor also addressed questions regarding investigations launched by the Office of the United States Trade Representative (USTR).

The USTR initiated two separate Section 301 investigations on March 11 and 12, 2026, covering 60 economies over concerns related to forced labour and excess industrial capacity.

On June 2, the USTR released its findings in the forced labour investigation and proposed additional tariffs on imports from the economies included in the review.

Responding to concerns about the tariffs, Gor clarified that the measures were not specifically directed at India. He said the tariffs were being applied broadly across countries and regions worldwide, including the European Union, Canada, Mexico, Japan and South Korea.

His remarks come as India and the United States continue efforts to conclude the trade agreement and further strengthen economic ties between the two countries.
