India is escalating measures to repatriate fugitive businessman Mehul Choksi to the country to confront charges related to the ₹13,850 crore Punjab National Bank (PNB) fraud case. The Ministry of External Affairs (MEA) stated on Thursday that it is “collaborating closely with Belgian authorities” to assist in Choksi’s extradition.
Choksi, apprehended in Belgium on April 12, 2025, is at the heart of a prominent case linked to financial offenses. India had earlier released non-bailable warrants for his arrest in 2018 and 2021, alleging that he masterminded one of the biggest banking frauds in India’s history.
During a weekly media briefing, a spokesperson for the MEA emphasized the government’s dedication to ensuring Choksi’s return to India to face a fair trial. “We are working together with Belgium to make sure the legal procedures are adhered to, and Choksi is returned to face trial,” the spokesperson stated.
Choksi, together with his nephew Nirav Modi, is accused of orchestrating the PNB scam, which created turmoil in India’s banking industry. Both are being sought for a number of criminal activities, such as conspiracy, fraud, and money laundering.
The detention in Belgium followed years of legal struggles and India’s ongoing diplomatic attempts to obtain Choksi’s extradition. Indian authorities have been pursuing his extradition to face allegations in the multi-crore fraud case, which remains unresolved in Indian courts.
As the legal processes in Belgium progress, the Indian government continues to concentrate on guaranteeing that justice is achieved in the PNB case and that Choksi is brought to trial in India for his suspected role in the financial fraud.
