Kolkata Knight Riders (KKR) will look to keep their fading IPL 2026 playoff hopes alive when they take on Mumbai Indians (MI) in a crucial encounter, with both teams battling injury concerns ahead of the contest.
Currently eighth on the points table with 11 points, KKR still have a mathematical chance of making the playoffs despite an inconsistent campaign marked by losing streaks, injury setbacks and disappointing Powerplay performances with both bat and ball.
Ajinkya Rahane’s side will need convincing wins in their remaining matches to stay in contention, but much could depend on the fitness of mystery spinner Varun Chakaravarthy. The spinner, who missed KKR’s clash against Royal Challengers Bengaluru and played through a sore foot against Gujarat Titans, reportedly trained briefly ahead of the Mumbai game but was seen limping during the session.
Mumbai Indians are also dealing with concerns surrounding captain Hardik Pandya, who missed the Dharamsala trip due to back issues. However, the all-rounder trained intensively with both bat and ball ahead of the KKR fixture and is expected to return to the playing XI.
Although MI are already out of playoff contention, the match remains important for Pandya personally as he looks to regain form after a difficult run since rejoining the franchise in 2024.
