Araghchi’s China trip takes place amid heightened tensions in West Asia following Iran’s military confrontation with the US. Tehran is seeking diplomatic engagement with key partners as regional instability continues.
Araghchi and Wang Yi had previously met during the Shanghai Cooperation Organisation Foreign Ministers’ Meeting in Kyrgyzstan in July. They also held a pull-aside meeting during the BRICS Summit in New Delhi.
Iranian President Masoud Pezeshkian led his country’s delegation at the BRICS Summit, where he urged member nations to oppose unilateral sanctions and take a stronger role in addressing global conflicts.
BRICS leaders adopted the New Delhi Declaration 2026, expressing concern over rising West Asia tensions and calling for civilian protection, restraint and respect for sovereignty.
Pezeshkian also met Prime Minister Narendra Modi, who stressed the need for regional peace, freedom of navigation, uninterrupted commerce and the safety of seafarers amid tensions around the Strait of Hormuz.
