The Last Tenant, featuring Irrfan Khan and Vidya Balan, has finally been released nearly 25 years after it was completed. The film premiered on YouTube on April 29 through The Salt Inc as a tribute on Irrfan’s sixth death anniversary.
Shot in 2000, the film showcases early performances by both actors and is believed to be among Vidya Balan’s earliest screen projects after television. It also remains the only on-screen collaboration between Irrfan and Vidya.
Written and directed by Sarthak Dasgupta, and produced by Neena and Sarthak Dasgupta, the project was delayed for decades after its original footage was lost. The film remained unreleased until a VHS copy was found, restored, and prepared for release.
The Last Tenant also marked Sarthak’s directorial debut before he later created projects such as Music Teacher, 200 Halla Ho, and Dharavi Bank.
Within three days of its release, the film drew close to two lakh views on YouTube.
Irrfan Khan died on April 29, 2020, at Mumbai’s Kokilaben Dhirubhai Ambani Hospital after battling cancer.
