Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu is scheduled to travel to the United States on Saturday, according to a senior Israeli official. While Netanyahu is seeking a meeting with US President Donald Trump during the visit, it remains unclear whether the talks will take place.
Sources quoted by reports said the visit is linked to memorial events and the funeral of late US Senator Lindsey Graham, a long-time supporter of Israel who died unexpectedly over the weekend.
This will be Netanyahu’s first visit to the United States since the joint US-Israel campaign against Iran began in late February. His office is expected to announce further details of the trip.
Earlier this month, Netanyahu sought to downplay past remarks made by Trump, saying, “America has no greater ally than Israel and Israel has no greater ally than the United States.”
Sources quoted by reports also said Netanyahu is expected to remain in the US until at least the following Sunday. Ahead of the visit, his office requested Austrian Chancellor Christian Stocker to postpone his planned trip to Israel.
