Kolkata: Still searching for their first win of the IPL 2026 season, Kolkata Knight Riders face a tough challenge against an in-form Lucknow Super Giants at Eden Gardens on Thursday.
KKR’s campaign has been far from ideal so far, with the team struggling for consistency in both batting and bowling. Their top order remains a concern, particularly the opening combination of Ajinkya Rahane and Finn Allen, which has failed to provide solid starts. A reshuffle at the top could be on the cards as the side looks to stabilise its innings.
The bowling unit, too, has not delivered as expected, with experienced campaigners Sunil Narine and Varun Chakravarthy yet to make a significant impact this season.
In contrast, Lucknow Super Giants have impressed with both bat and ball. Their bowling attack, led by Mohammed Shami, has been particularly effective in the powerplay. Shami is coming off an outstanding spell against Sunrisers Hyderabad, where he removed dangerous openers early, and will look to exploit KKR’s fragile top order again.
LSG’s depth in bowling, including young pacer Prince Yadav and mystery spinner Digvesh Rathi, has further strengthened their attack, with the side already reducing opponents to 26/4 in the powerplay on two occasions this season.
On the batting front, skipper Rishabh Pant will be key after his composed unbeaten 68 in the previous match. He will be supported by experienced players such as Mitchell Marsh and Aiden Markram at the top.
KKR’s last outing against Punjab Kings saw them slump to 16/2 before rain forced a washout, adding to their frustration. Weather could once again play a role, although a late start is expected to limit interruptions.
With pressure mounting, KKR will be desperate to open their account this season, while LSG will aim to continue their strong run and consolidate their position in the standings.
