Indian cricket stalwarts Virat Kohli and Rohit Sharma may have stepped away from T20 Internationals and Test cricket, but their stature within the team remains firmly intact. The Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) on Wednesday confirmed that both veterans will continue to hold Grade A+ central contracts for the 2024–25 season.
BCCI secretary Devajit Saikia made the announcement, emphasizing that Kohli and Rohit remain integral to Indian cricket’s plans, particularly in the ODI format and leadership capacities. They will enjoy all the privileges associated with the elite A+ category, which includes the highest annual retainership, exclusive endorsements, and priority access to facilities.
Joining them in the top bracket are pace spearhead Jasprit Bumrah and all-rounder Ravindra Jadeja — both key figures in India’s current setup across formats.
The decision to retain Kohli and Rohit in the top tier comes despite their formal retirement from two major formats. Kohli, who ended his Test and T20I career recently, leaves behind a glittering legacy. Rohit Sharma, meanwhile, exits as a record-breaker in his own right.
While their retirements mark the close of a legendary chapter in Indian cricket, the duo’s continued presence in the A+ category underlines their value — not just as seasoned campaigners in ODIs, but also as mentors guiding the next generation.
