Sunday was pretty dramatic for the Metropolitan Magistrate Court in Bandra when Mohammad Shariful Islam Shehzad, the alleged attacker of actor Saif Ali Khan, appeared in the court.
Events turned filmy when two lawyers allegedly shot for Shehzad’s high-profile case, leaving all in confusion and, more importantly, much attention.
According to PTI reports, the court asked him if he had any complaints against the police, to which Shehzad replied in the negative. He was then taken to a box meant for accused persons in the back end of the courtroom.
Then, a lawyer came forward, claiming to be appearing for the accused.
However, just when he was about to take the signature of the accused on the ‘vakalatamana’ (legal document authorising a lawyer to appear in a case).
Another lawyer made his way to the accused box and took Shehzad’s signature on his vakalatamana, triggering moments of confusion about who would appear for the alleged attacker.
To defuse the situation, the magistrate suggested that both competing lawyers represent Shehzad. “You both can appear,” the magistrate said, refocusing the focus on the remand proceedings. The duo agreed.
The court subsequently remanded Shehzad in police custody for five days.
Mumbai Police caught Shehzad from Thane city early Sunday morning after misidentifying two other individuals earlier in the investigation. Shehzad, suspected to be a Bangladeshi national, is accused of entering Saif Ali Khan’s Bandra apartment in the early hours of January 16 with the intent to commit theft. The incident escalated when the intruder allegedly stabbed the actor multiple times.
